It did make me think about the fact that it is a good time to be an educator. There are some great toys (I'm supposed to call them tools) that teachers can use to engage students that are available. Teachers are sometimes frustrated by the pace of the times and how much change has occurred as the result of the rapid technological development that has taken place in the past decade. The burden to learn about these tools and classroom application has largely fallen to educators to learn about on their own. I think there are many motivated educators who have taken time to see how these tools can enhance instruction and help students to have deeper learning goals and that makes me very hopeful. I am working for a district that is paying technologically-minded educators to learn about these technologies and help teachers to apply it in the classrooms. I think this is a wise investment by Canyons District, partially because it has given me the opportunity to have a really fun job, but mostly because these tools are the future.
When I attended high school, the main tool we used in class was a pencil and later on (when I had proved I could be trusted) a pen. In college I used a computer to complete assignments, but were not ever a part of the live learning in class. This is the case for everyone I know who teaches school currently. Technology integration will become, I believe, as much a part of learning as the pen and pencil is and have been. As this revolution is happening, great teachers are really shining as their desire to engage students in the most current ways possible are becoming more and more affordable. Districts who are supporting these educators with intelligent purchasing practices are seeing the improved engagement of their students. It's up to teachers to be current with the times, and the ability to do this is becoming more and more accessible through hired specialists and availability to research resources online.
As teaching practices change to integrate these tools into the curriculum, educator thinking is also changing. Technology can make teaching more efficient and engaging if used properly. There are demands to differentiate to meet all the needs of a diverse class of students. This is becoming more possible through the implementation of these tools and programs. It's a great time to be in education!
