ISD from the Ground Up by Chuck Hodell

This book is the first book we are reading in the Ed Tech Endorsement Program.  I'm going to be adding to this concept map to help me organize the ideas about Instructional Design discussed in this text.

Chapter 1: A Brief and Unofficial History of ISD
  • This chapter focused on some of the contributors to what we now understand to be instructional design.  The mentioned education researchers were: Bertalanffy-founded Systems Theory, B.F. Skinner (1904-1990), Benjamin Bloom (1913-1999), Robert Mager, Robert Glaser (1921-2012), Robert Gagne (1916-2002), and Dr. J. Marvin Cook.

Chapter 2: ISD Practices and Principals
  • This chapter gave a rationale for the practice of using Instructional Design to prepare teaching.  One idea expressed in this chapter was that if an instructor is having a problem with a specific ISD task, it is due to a flaw in the design.

Chapter 3: ISD and the ADDIE model
  • This chapter introduces the ADDIE model of Instructional Design.  ADDIE is an acronym for analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation.  This model uses each of these aspects to create a system of design that is pragmatic and flexible for the instructor.  
Chapter 4: Analysis
  • This chapter outlines the Analysis stage of the ADDIE ISD Model.  It includes the identification of the problem as having a training or non-training solution, what to look for when doing a population analysis, evaluation of appropriate instruction methods, and the degree at which the instructional design will remain relevant (half-life). 
Chapter 5 & 10: Design/Design Plans
  • This chapter shows how critical the design phase is to the success of a project.  The Design phase is where the structure of a project is introduced and all other phases of the ADDiE model should be built around the design structure created here.  Vital elements of the design phase include: facilitator/learner prerequisites, description of the training, deliverables, rationale,an evaluation strategy, and objectives (desired outcomes).
Chapter 6 & 11: Development & Lesson Plans
  • This chapter discusses the implementation of the blueprint developed in the Design phase.  The book describes this stage as being the bridge between design and implementation.  It is here where materials are created and lesson plans are solidified.  It incorporates the 9 Events of Instruction set apart by Gagne.  
Chapter 7: Implementation
  • This chapter discusses the Implementation Phase of the ADDIE model.  Here the class is held and the students are then evaluated to assess understanding and bring to light any weaknesses in the content.  The evaluative levels utilized in this phase are Kirkpatrick's 4 levels (Level 1-Reaction, Level 2-Learning, Level 3-Behavior, and Level 4-Results.

Chapter 8: Evaluation
  • This chapter continues with Kirkpatrick's 4 levels mentioned above.  It includes discussion of how evaluation is used in the previous phases of the ADDIE model.  It mentions some examples of potential problems to look for when putting together a design and how the evaluations reveal this as they are implemented in the previous phases.
